High School, Foundation or Diploma: Your NZ Study Pathway
Your next step in New Zealand depends on where you are in your education now and what you want to study later. Continuing secondary school, taking a foundation programme, completing a diploma or applying directly for a degree can each suit different circumstances.
Continuing at a New Zealand high school
For students who still need to complete secondary education, a suitable New Zealand school can provide time to develop academic English, choose relevant subjects and prepare for university study.
Placement should take account of age, previous schooling and the subjects needed for the intended degree. Students can consider schools offering NCEA, Cambridge International or IB, depending on availability and fit.
Taking a foundation programme
A foundation programme may suit students whose current school qualification or results do not meet direct university entry requirements. It typically develops subject knowledge, academic English and study skills for degree-level learning.
Before accepting a place, check which universities and degrees recognise the programme, the required final results and any subject prerequisites. Progression depends on meeting the relevant conditions. See a university example of foundation entry requirements.
Considering a diploma pathway
Some diplomas provide a route into a related degree, potentially with credit for completed study. Confirm the specific agreement: which degree is available, how much credit may be awarded and what grades are needed.
The word “diploma” alone does not establish a pathway into the second year of a bachelor's degree.
Applying directly for a bachelor's degree
Students who have completed an accepted secondary qualification and meet the university's academic and English requirements may be able to apply directly. Programme-specific selection, prerequisite subjects, portfolios or interviews may also apply.
What if English is the main gap?
An English-language programme may help prepare you for further study. Check whether the provider accepts that course for progression or still requires an approved test result.
Compare the complete journey
Assess the time and cost of every stage, the progression conditions, academic readiness and the final qualification. A pathway should give you a realistic opportunity to succeed in your intended subject.
We can help compare these options using your age, school reports, expected graduation date, English results, preferred subjects, target institutions and budget.
