New Zealand Schools: A Guide for International Families
Choosing a New Zealand school involves your child's learning needs, confidence in English, interests and future goals. The right school should also fit your family's accommodation plans, budget and preferred location.
JZ Immigration & Education helps international families understand the options and plan school applications alongside the relevant visa arrangements.
Understand the year levels
New Zealand schooling runs from Year 1 to Year 13. Primary education includes Years 1–8, with some schools covering Years 1–6 and separate intermediate schools covering Years 7–8. Secondary schools usually cover Years 9–13. New Zealand's school system.
Placement needs to consider the student's age and previous learning. For senior secondary students, the entry date and available subjects should also support their intended university pathway.
Compare schools and curricula
Families can consider state, state-integrated and private schools. State-integrated schools have a special character, often connected with a religious or educational tradition. International fees, admission criteria and available places vary between schools.
NCEA is the most common senior secondary qualification. Some schools also offer Cambridge International or the International Baccalaureate. Compare the subjects, assessment approach and support available for your child, especially where a future degree has prerequisite subjects.
Look beyond a school's reputation
A useful shortlist considers:
Academic fit and English-language support.
Available subjects and future university goals.
Location, transport and accommodation.
Pastoral care and international student support.
Sporting, creative and other interests.
Tuition and the full cost of attendance.
For younger students, parent or caregiver arrangements should be considered at the start. The school's accommodation requirements and the family's visa options need to work together.
Build a realistic budget and timeline
Budget for tuition, accommodation, living costs, insurance, uniforms, transport and activities, as well as application-related costs. Obtain current school quotes before comparing the total cost of different options.
As a planning guide, begin six to twelve months before the intended start date, and earlier where places are limited. Admission, enrolment and visa preparation all take time.
