Parent Retirement Resident Visa: Requirements and Process
If your adult child lives in New Zealand and you have the assets and income to invest, the Parent Retirement Resident Visa may offer a way to join your family as a resident.
This category focuses on the parents' own funds, income and investment arrangements. It has its own application process, separate from the Parent Resident Visa expression-of-interest system.
Key requirements at a glance
Requirement | What to prepare |
Family connection | An adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident living in New Zealand and meets the category's requirements. |
Investment | At least NZD $1 million in acceptable New Zealand investments for four years. |
Settlement funds | At least NZD $500,000, separate from the investment funds. |
Annual income | At least NZD $60,000. |
Other eligibility | No dependent children; the required health, character and lawful source-of-funds evidence. |
A qualifying partner may be included. Your child's residence status and any section 49 conditions also need to be checked. INZ's Parent Retirement requirements.
Your evidence should explain how the funds were built
An asset total is only part of the application. The evidence should show who owns the assets, how they were acquired and how the nominated investment funds can be transferred lawfully.
Relevant documents may include salary and tax records, business accounts, dividend records, property sale documents or evidence of inheritance or a lawful gift. The documents should form a clear history from the original source through to the funds available for investment.
For assets held overseas, consider both the evidence and the practical steps needed to sell assets and transfer funds. This is especially important where local foreign-exchange rules affect the available transfer route.
The application process
We begin with your family circumstances, asset position, annual income and proposed source of investment funds. We then prepare the evidence and application within the agreed scope.
Following approval in principle, INZ currently allows 12 months to transfer and invest the nominated funds. The investment must then be maintained for the required four-year period, with evidence supplied at the relevant checkpoints. Permanent residence can be considered once all conditions are met and the necessary conditions are removed. Review the official process and conditions.
How JZ Immigration can help
We assess the family and financial requirements, identify gaps in the source-of-funds evidence, organise the application and help you understand investment and visa deadlines. Investment selection and tax planning should be addressed with appropriately qualified professionals.
Before a consultation, prepare a summary of your child's New Zealand status, family members, annual income, assets, available investment funds and preferred timing.
